UL 48 LICENSING FOR SIGNAGE

(UL) 48 Standard for Electric Signs. Now in its 15th edition, UL 48 requirements cover all electric signs, art forms, outline lighting and skeleton neon tubing. For decades, ISA has taken a leading role in the development of UL Standards that keep pace with advances in electric sign technology.

Article 600 of the NEC covers the requirements for electric signs and outline lighting. Section 600.3 requires that electric signs, section signs and outline lighting be listed and installed in conformance with that listing. UL 48 provides the basis for listing by providing requirements for evaluation of the construction and performance as well as requirements for proper field installation. The UL product category for signs (UYXT) and for changing message signs (UYFS) includes all types of electrically-operated and/or illuminated signs regardless of voltage, including, but not limited to; incandescent, fluorescent, high intensity discharge (HID), neon, light-emitting diode (LED), cold cathode and electroluminescence.

CERTIFICATIONS

OSHA Certified: OSHA Certification ensures that the certificate holder is equipped to work towards a healthier and safer work environment.

AWRF Rigging Certified: OSHA’s Crane and Derricks standard (1926.1700- Subpart CC) requires all riggers to be “Qualified” and all crane signalers to be “trained. Employers must use qualified riggers during hoisting activities for assembly and disassembly work (1926.1404(r)(1)). Additionally, qualified riggers are required whenever workers are within the fall zone and hooking, unhooking, guiding a load, or doing the initial connection of a load to a component or structure (1926.1425(c)).

Train the Trainer Certification Aerial Lifts: Currently, there are no requirements set forth by OSHA or the manufacturers of aerial lifts for operators to be certified. Here is the catch though: Just because there is no certification does not mean operators do not have to be trained. According to OSHA Subpart I, 1926.453(a)(2), “only authorized persons shall operate an aerial lift.”

Train the Trainer Certification for Forklifts and All-Terrain Lifts: OSHA spells out the OSHA forklift certification requirements for employee forklift training in 1910.178(l). In the standard, OSHA requires employers to develop and implement a forklift operator training program. OSHA requires that the forklift training program be based on general principles of safe forklift operation, type of vehicles being used, hazards created by the use of the forklift in the workplace, and the general safety requirements of the OSHA powered industrial truck/forklift standard.

Certified Welders in Structural Aluminum and Steel: You can be qualified without being certified, but you cannot be certified without being qualified. Certified Welding to AWS Standards is a requirement in building code and occupational health and safety legislations, structural design codes for aluminum and stainless steels, highway and roadway codes for traffic bearing structures. We are qualified and certified in ornate, structural and mechanical fabrication in all metal types.
